How to Play Baccarat

We’ve put together a bit of beginner’s information including the rules and a betting guide to help you understand how this exciting casino game works and how you can win big playing it. Baccarat is a table game played with cards and originating in France about 700 years ago. As card games go, it’s a pretty exciting one to play and once you know how to play, it’s pretty straight forward. It may not be like most card games you have probably come across before in that your face cards like your King and Queen are actually worth zero. So is the 10. But we’ll get to that later.

Baccarat online is the table game that usually gets highlighted in the big spy movies of yesteryear. Trim suits and martinis, cigar smoke and pretty girls, that’s what you usually find crowded around the baccarat table. Think James Bond and sweeping European vistas.

There are also different types of baccarat available to play depending on the casino and the part of the world. Banque is a version usually played in Europe and comprises of three hands – one for the banker and two player hands. Punto Banco is the type you usually find in most other casinos. In Chemin de fer, the dealer will deal four down cards. You might have also heard of this type of version known as ‘Railroad’.

Here, we’ve put together a bit of the basics of the game for those new to it but there’s nothing like actually playing it for real for it to all make sense. Everything’s easy once you know how and winning at online baccarat could be the easiest thing in the world.

Just like in a live casino, baccarat online is played at tables featuring players, bankers and a caller. Each player is betting on the outcome of a card draw and they will bet that either the banker’s hand will win, the player’s hand will win, or that there is a tie and both the player’s hand and the banker’s hand are of equal value. There’s a bit of French in the rule book owing to the game’s origin so each round of play is called a coup and betting options include a wager called a cheval which lets you split your bet over two hands.

Right at the start and after the cards are shuffled the dealer burns cards or discards them. It’s usually the top three to six cards. After the opening bet is made and you’ve chosen how much you will wager on the hand you think will win, the cards are dealt, and the banker and the player each get two cards dealt face up and put in the appropriate boxes corresponding to each party. The outcomes of each available, remember, are that the player wins, the banker wins, or that there is a tie and the cards of both hands are equal.

If you bet on your hand and your hand wins, then you win the bet. Sounds pretty straight forward. Your winnings are twice your wager. So, if you bet $25 then you win $50. If you chose to bet on the dealer’s hand, so winning banker bets, then your win is 95% of your wager.

The winning hand is whichever hand is closest to nine. A natural win of hand that totals nine is called la grande and hand totals 8 is called la petite. That mind sound fairly straight forward but remember what we said a little earlier about how the face cards are actually worth zero in this game? Well, so is 10. All the other cards except for 10 and the face cards are worth their face value, with the ace worth 1 point. You want the hand that you have chosen to bet on to be closest to nine to win. If you fancy betting on a tie with the banker, then the odds for that win pay 8 to 1.

If the cards drawn equal 5 or less, then a third card can be drawn by the player otherwise, with totals of 6 or 7, the player will stand. The banker may choose to pull a third card, or he may not. After the draw is complete, the totals of the banker’s hand and the player’s hand are compared. The higher hand wins.

A dragon bet is a type of bonus wager you can play which allows you to bet that the winning hand has won by at least four points.
  • First choose whether to bet on the Player, the Banker, a Tie or a combination of all three by placing chips ($1, $5, $25, $100 and $500 – the maximum wager is $500) on the marked circles on the table and clicking the "Deal" button. Both the Player and the Banker will then receive two cards.
  • Victory goes to the party with the highest total hand value. If both hands are tied, it is considered a loss unless you bet on a tie. The total is decided by adding up the cards that make up each party's hand. If the totals reach the double digit range, only the second number counts as the value of the hand. Example 1: 7 + 7 = 14. The Baccarat result is 4. Example 2: King (zero) + 6 = 6. The Baccarat result is six.
  • The Player always plays first and receives a third card if the two-card total falls between zero and five.
  • The Banker can also receive extra cards. If the Banker's hand value is equal to seven, eight or nine, the Banker will stand. If the Banker's hand value is equal to zero, one or two, the Banker draws another card. If the hand total falls between three and six, the Banker draws a card according to the chart below:

Ranks

  • The suit of a card has no bearing or value.
  • Cards 2 to 9 have face value.
  • 10's, jacks, queens, and kings are worth zero.
  • Aces are worth 1.
  • Add the values of each card in the hand, and if the value is two digits, drop the first digit to determine the score.
  • For example, 7 + 7 = 14 results in a value of 4 when you drop the first digit.

Wagers and Payouts

  • You can bet on Player, Banker, Tie or any combination of the three.
  • The hand with the highest total wins.
  • Player pays 1-1.
  • Banker pays 1-1 minus a 5% commission*. Example a $5 wager pays $4.75 for a total of $9.75.
  • If you wager on a Tie and there is in fact a tie, you'll receive a 9-1 payout.

*The commission is 5% of the bet and is rounded up to the next quarter. For example, a minimum bet of $6 would deduct a $0.50 commission. 5% of $6 = 30 cents, but since the commission is rounded up to the next 25 cents; the commission is actually 50 cents. 5% of $11 = $0.55 makes the actual commission $0.75.

Baccarat is a table game and features the players and the banker, and a caller. You are betting on the outcome of a card draw and so you can bet on the player, you can bet on the banker or you can bet on the chance that both hands are a tie. Each round is known as a coup.

To begin, the dealer shuffles the cards, and the first 3 to 6 cards are burned, or discarded. You choose how much you will wager and indicate your bet by choosing to bet on the banker’s hand, the player’s hand or on the chances that both hands will tie. The player and the banker receive 2 cards facing up. The winning hand is whichever hand totals, or is closest to, a total of 9 points. In baccarat, picture cards are worth zero, the 10 card is worth zero and an ace is worth 2 points. All of the other cards are worth their face value and a natural win is a hand totalling 9 points.

When you bet on the player’s hand, the payout is twice your wager. So, if you bet $25 then you win $50. If you chose to bet on the dealer’s hand, so a banker win, then your win is 95% of your wager. If you bet on a tie, then the odds pay out 8 to 1.

If the cards drawn equal 5 or less, a third card can be drawn by the player. Otherwise, with totals of 6 or 7, the player will stand. Remember, to make a winning bet, you need the hand you have bet on to be closer to 9 points than the other hand. The banker may also choose to pull a third card, or they may not. After the draw is complete, the totals of the banker’s hand and the player’s hand are compared.

There are a few different kinds of bets available depending on the game and they include a dragon bet which is a type of bonus wager you can play which allows you to bet that the winning hand has won by at least four points.

If you’re looking for a winning strategy, then most strategists will advise you to place your bet on the banker’s hand. Given the house edge on these bets, the odds of a win are reflected here. Remember, you only win 95% of your bet when you bet on the banker. It is true that the banker enjoys a slight advantage, especially if a third card needs to be drawn. Betting on the outcome of a tie has about a 14% chance of a win and it pays accordingly but most serious strategists will not advise placing that bet too often if you want to hang around the tables for a while. Some players swear by placing your bets exclusively on the banker until he loses and then switch to the player’s hands.

How to win playing baccarat online

Most strategists for baccarat online will advise you to place your bet on the banker’s hand and the number of wins on these bets are reflected in the odds paid for the win. The banker enjoys a slight advantage, especially if a third card needs to be drawn. A common betting strategy is to bet on the banker until he loses then switch your bet to the player’s hand. But everyone’s different. Winning a tie has about a 14% chance on the draw so if you’re playing to win that might not be your first, go-to bet of the evening. If you’re feeling particularly lucky then why not?

That should be enough to get you started in Practice Mode and playing a few rounds of baccarat online. Once you’re comfortable with the betting types and you’re ready to play for real money just launch the game in live mode and get started or choose any of our online slots real money.
